Study on mothers’ re-entry into their jobs

On behalf of the SBB, the Chair of Work and Organizational Psychology conducted a study on mothers’ re-entry into their jobs after maternal leave.

by Jacqueline Hohermuth

In the study, we analyzed survey data gathered from 800 mothers and fathers in Switzerland as well as qualitative data generated in 30 interviews with Swiss company representatives. We found that supporting mothers’ re-entry into their jobs can generate numerous advantages for companies. For instance, it enables companies to position themselves as socially responsible and attractive employers and to establish a company culture which increases employees’ loyalty and identification with the company.
The data analysis further revealed that although most companies acknowledge the importance of the topic and establish measures to support mothers’ re-entry into their jobs, there still exist certain hurdles for all involved parties. To address these hurdles, companies should facilitate fathers’ involvement in their families, provide mothers and fathers with flexibility and establish a supportive company culture that recognizes the importance of managing work and family demands.
